MAGIC HEALS
For many, the decision to begin therapy can be uncomfortable and even scary. As a therapist who works with teens and children, I’ve found that establishing rapport and creating a healthy therapeutic environment is paramount. One of the tools I find very effective with many is incorporating magic. Not only is magic a wonderful icebreaker, it is also a way to reduce anxiety and take the focus for a moment off of life feeling so overwhelming. This is especially important for children who can become very overwhelmed with new emotions. By having a distraction or relief from this anxiety and emotions, many find it easier to come back to the feelings and process them. Additionally, when kids learn to perform magic, themselves, they learn a special skill that few others possess. In this way, I’ve found that magic can be a catalyst to help teens and children to relate differently and to help me, as the therapist, to connect.
